Assistant Professor in Music Technology, with Specialization in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering

The departments of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), and Music and Theater Arts (MTA) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA seek candidates for a position in Music Technology at the level of assistant professor, starting July 1, 2024, or on a mutually agreed date thereafter.   Under special circumstances, an untenured associate appointment may be possible, commensurate with experience.

We seek candidates who are deeply engaged with music, have expertise applying engineering principles to music research, and who embrace MIT's "mens et manus" philosophy.   Candidates should be investigating areas where music and technology are intertwined to make discoveries that would not be possible without a deep understanding of both disciplines.  

MIT recently approved the creation of a master's degree program in Music Technology.   The successful candidate will be intimately involved in the direction and growth of this program.   This search is one of several anticipated hires in the near term, with the goals of creating a cohort of faculty at the intersection of music and technology, and of fostering an intellectually rich and well-resourced research environment.

Qualifications:

Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to: modeling and design for music technology, robotic musical systems and human interaction; physics-based approaches for musical devices, instruments, or performance systems; signal processing for music and audio; acoustics; music and health; biosensing for listeners and performers; integration of sensors, actuators, and advanced materials to performance systems; novel musical instruments; estimation and control theory for music technology; machine learning for the design and manufacture of musical devices; or mechanics and artificial intelligence for embedded music and audio systems.   This listing is not exhaustive; researchers in related disciplines or emerging areas are welcome to apply.  

A doctorate in a field related to music technology, including but not limited to music, engineering, music technology, media technology, data science, applied mathematics, or a similar discipline, is required by the beginning of employment.   Candidates should have musical training and expertise in some aspect of music performance, improvisation, composition, theory, musicology, ethnomusicology, electronic music, or music production.

Duties:

The successful candidate will have a shared appointment between MTA and either MechE or EECS/EE, and will join a growing cohort of faculty at MIT with a multidisciplinary focus.   The tenure home department will be agreed upon during the interview process so as to create the best fit.   Faculty duties include conducting original research, teaching classes in music technology and in the associated engineering department, and advising at the undergraduate and graduate levels.   The normal teaching load is 3 subjects per year, but is reduced to 2 subjects per year for PIs who spend substantial effort running a lab and mentoring PhD students and postdocs.   Faculty receive startup funds, but are expected to apply for outside grants to support their research group.
